HEALTHCARE & INNOVATION
We’re the UK’s first city for health and innovation
Leeds is home to St James’s University Hospital, internationally famous as Europe’s largest teaching hospital, employing over 20,000 staff and affectionately known as Jimmy’s.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT), incorporates a world renowned biomedical research facility, a leading clinical trials research unit and recently began work on a new state-of-the-art hospital for adults, and a new purpose-built home for Leeds Children’s Hospital – where world-class care will be delivered in the most innovative surroundings.
The headquarters of NHS England is based in the city centre along with the head office of NHS Digital and their teams that design, develop and operate the national IT and data services to support clinicians.
Research and innovation at the University of Leeds focuses on some of the most pressing challenges facing healthcare; musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular disease, viral infections and cancer.
Leeds’ digital health jobs make up 22% of the UK total, with some of the NHS’s major suppliers based here including DePuy Synthes, Brandon Medical, Egton Medical Information Systems (EMIS), The Phoenix Partnership (TPP) suppliers of primary care systems, and IT consultancy company BJSS who delivered the redeveloped NHS Spine. Our unique health and social care ecosystem encourages collaboration across private, public and voluntary sectors, with everyone working together to improve health outcomes in our city.
