CREATIVE & DIGITAL

Our digital sector is growing faster than anywhere else in the UK

Over 1,795 digital businesses are already based here, with a combined workforce of over 37,000.

That’s just part of why we’ve gained a reputation as the UK’s northern digital and information hub, with the highest number of ‘scale-up’ digital companies outside the south east. We’re home to the largest data set in the world!

One celebrated initiative, the innovative P-Tech partnership, is a collaboration between IBM, Leeds City Council, Leeds City College, Leeds Beckett University and local high schools. It works to strengthen the economy by building a digital-ready workforce with the technical and professional skills required for competitive digital technology careers.

Another cause for celebration is the announcement of Channel 4’s landmark digital creative unit, which will host the station’s news programming. Several larger independent production companies have also opened offices, studios, and post-production facilities in Leeds as a result.

Creative, Media & Digital Industries

Leeds now sits at the heart of the UK’s creative industries sector, a vital part of the economy, growing twice as fast as other sectors and employing over two million people. It is home to Screen Yorkshire and Channel 4’s new national headquarters, with several hundred new creative industry roles created in the city in recent years inspiring the next generation of creatives.

Digital jobs are a big feature of the creative sector with digital technology being used across many organisations to produce and deliver creative and innovative content.

The city offers a deep pool of digital talent with major employers include Sky’s Digital & Technology Services Campus, which employs 650 members of staff focused on software and hardware development, Sky Betting & Gaming with 1,500 people based in Leeds, as well as the world leading technology and engineering consultancy BJSS in the city.
