Leeds benefits from a ready-made talent pool of construction workers, aided by a unique institution – Leeds College of Building is the only further education college in the UK dedicated to construction and the built environment. With 6,500 students on the books, it provides apprenticeships and courses from entry-level up to and including level 5 (university level). The institution also maintains strong links with businesses, partnering with over 500 leading employers.
The contribution of the construction sector can be seen everywhere, from larger city centre developments, to smaller initiatives in town and district centres. The South Bank development is a prime example, with plans ongoing to create a £180 million neighbourhood on a five-acre area of desolate land near Leeds city centre.
