Deloitte Crane Survey reveals Leeds has enjoyed a record-breaking year for construction
The Leeds Crane Survey by Deloitte is a report measuring developments taking place across Leeds City Centre, recording data between 4th January 2021 and 5th January 2022.
The report shows that 2021 has been a record breaking year with 10 new residential developments and the highest amount of education space delivered in a single year. The development pipeline highlights that Leeds looks set to continue the trend for a number of years to come.
- Over all sectors, Leeds saw 22 total new starts in 2021 – the second highest number of new starts since the survey began
- 2021 saw a record 10 new residential developments starting construction, delivering 2,267 new homes. This represents an increase of 210% on new starts compared to the previous year.
- Leeds saw five new starts in the office sector, with over 860,000 sq ft of office floor space was under construction compared with about 380,000 sq ft in 2020.
- The survey shows a surge in the construction of student accommodation, with six new starts and 2,226 bedspaces currently under construction.
- The retail, leisure and hotel sectors were subdued in 2021. There were no retail or leisure new starts, and one hotel new start.
